50th 12ft Skiff Interdominions - Auckland 2010

The 9th-17th January sees the Interdominion Championships for the 12ft Skiff Class take place in Auckland, New Zealand. This event marks the 50th Interdominion Championships, and there will be an anniversary dinner to celebrate this landmark event in the history of the class.

Having formed in Sydney, Australia in the late 19th or early 20th Century, the 12ft Skiff is one of the oldest known dinghy racing classes in the world. With the adoption of the class in New Zealand in the early 1950s, the first “Interdominion Championships” between Australia and New Zealand took place in 1957 and was won by Frank Rance in Farwac (AUS). Other notable Interdominion Champions over the years include Russell Bowler, Bruce Farr, John Winning, Iain Murray, Craig Ramsden, and Emitt Lazich.

With the recent adoption of the class into the UK 4 years ago and interest from mainland Europe, the Class is set for an exciting next decade in its history. Since the original contest, 12ft Skiff have developed into what is now viewed as one of the most extreme and exciting classes of racing dinghies in the world, with the open rules encouraging experimentation of ideas, and refinement of design, construction techniques, and materials.
